Writing

Writing your introduction

At the interview you have to produce a hand-written introduction of about one A/4 page. You can write it in advance and bring it with you. This guide helps with the structure and with correct handwriting.

What should it contain?

1. Introduction

Who you are: name, age, where you live, your citizenship.

2. Hungarian ancestry

Who your Hungarian ancestor is, where and when they were born, their occupation, and when and why they left the country.

3. Family

Spouse, children, parents — name, age, occupation.

4. Occupation and everyday life

What you do for a living, how your days go, your hobbies.

5. Hungarian language and Hungary

How long and how you have been learning Hungarian, whether you have visited Hungary, what you liked.

6. Why you want to become a Hungarian citizen

Your roots, your family, the culture — and a short closing with thanks, the date and your signature.

Handwriting — what to watch for

  • Hungarian has accented letters: á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű. Always mark them exactly — a missing accent means a different word.
  • Write legibly and a little slower. Neat, clear handwriting is worth more than speed.
  • Break the text into paragraphs, and leave a blank line between them.
  • If you make a mistake, don't scribble: cross it out once, cleanly, and continue.
  • Finish the page with the date and your signature.

Model introduction (A/4)

Replace the details in [square brackets] with your own. The model is about one A/4 page long — so you can copy it out by hand.

My name is [János Kovács], I am [thirty-five] years old, and I live in [New York], in the United States. I am a citizen of the United States, and I live together with my family, my wife and my two children.

My Hungarian roots come from my mother's father, my grandfather. He was born in [Budapest] on [the twelfth of April, 1925], and his name was [István Kovács]. In his youth he was a [carpenter]. After [1956] he left Hungary, first to [Vienna], and then went to America. My grandfather was always proud of his Hungarian origin, and told the family a lot about Hungary.

A családomban a feleségem, [Anna], [harminchárom] éves, [ápolónőként] dolgozik. Két gyermekünk van: a fiam, [Márk], [öt] éves, óvodás, és a lányom, [Eszter], [hét] éves, iskolás. A szüleim [New Yorkban] élnek, mindketten nyugdíjasok.

In my family, my wife, [Anna], is [thirty-three] and works as a [nurse]. We have two children: my son, [Márk], is [five], in kindergarten, and my daughter, [Eszter], is [seven], at school. My parents live in [New York], both retired.

I work as a [teacher] in a [primary school]. Every morning I get up at [seven], and set off for work at [eight]. In the afternoon I am with my family, and at the weekend I like reading, walking in nature and cooking.

I have been learning Hungarian for [two] years. I attend a language course, I also practise at home, and in memory of my grandfather I try to learn as much as I can. [Two] years ago I visited Hungary with my family: we visited the Parliament, Buda Castle and Heroes' Square. I really liked the country, the kindness of the people and Hungarian cuisine.

I want to become a Hungarian citizen because my roots tie me to Hungary. Hungarian culture and language matter to me, and I would like my children to know their Hungarian heritage too. I would be proud to be able to become a Hungarian citizen.

Köszönöm szépen a lehetőséget. [New York], [2026. szeptember 26.] [Kovács János]

Thank you very much for the opportunity. [New York], [26 September 2026] [János Kovács]
